This is the site of the BuzzMonitor™, an open source aggregator conceived and sponsored by the World Bank and co-developed by the World Bank, Development Seed and the World Resources Institute.
Requirements
The BuzzMonitor is built on top of open-source technologies and software. It runs on Apache 2.x, MySQL 4.x or newer and PHP 4.1 or newer. BuzzMonitor was developed and tested on Linux-compatible platforms, but it should be possible to install it on a Windows system, as well. BuzzMonitor requires numerous non-standard PHP extensions like GD2, CURL, MHASH and several others. In addition, being familiar with Drupal will help. Drupal session management may require additional configuration when installing on PHP5; so you may find it easier to use PHP4, instead.
Current distribution requires a MySQL installation with InnoDB enabled.
Hosting |
| BuzzMonitor is a complex and fairly resource-intensive software system. We strongly recommend a dedicated server with plenty of RAM available. BuzzMonitor has been extensively tested on a Linux platform and it is the operating system we recommend. |
Bandwidth |
| As for any other web system, bandwidth utilization of the BuzzMonitor depends on usage. Being a "mashup" of different web-services and an aggregator, its performance can be strongly affected by the connection robustness between the BuzzMonitor server and those of Yahoo, Technorati, Alexa and other service providers. |
Configuration |
| BuzzMonitor is a database-intensive application. Tunning MySQL installation (e.g. enabling query cache and setting it to a high level) can have significant effect on the application performance. Using a PHP code-cache like eAccelerator or APC has shown to significantly improve the performance, as well. |
